Our verdict

Toyota's footprint was 513,981 kt CO2e in the year to March 2026, down from 589,573 kt, but most of the drop comes from narrowing the boundary to exclude Toyota-brand vehicles made outside its consolidated group. It reports 51% renewable electricity against a 2030 target of 80%. Its Scope 1 and 2 target is SBTi-approved at 1.5°C; its use-phase target is per vehicle, and it has no absolute Scope 3 target. In March 2025 a US court accepted a guilty plea from Hino Motors, then its subsidiary, over falsified emissions data and imposed penalties of over $1.6 billion. InfluenceMap finds it opposed vehicle GHG standards in the US, EU, UK, Canada, Australia and India.
